Exploring the world through paint

I enjoy the journey of discovery, pushing myself to look at my subjects from many different angles and experimenting with materials to find new ways of expressing what I find most interesting about them. I’m drawn to botanicals and the human figure as the primary subjects of my work; their forms, movement and interaction with the invisible forces of gravity, time and energy give me so much to think about and explore.

The side of my house is covered in Virginia Creeper, an ivy that creates layers of beautiful leaves. In the fall, they turn to purples, reds, oranges and pinks. This painting is part of my “Autumn’s Glory” collection that celebrates both the natural patters of the leaves layered on top of one another and the colors of fall.

I isolated this "curtain" of purple leaves from its environment and put it on a lush raspberry color. There is depth between the layers of leaves, but also a flattened perspective with the background being a solid color. I enjoyed playing with the relationship of both space and color in this piece.

The edges of the canvas are painted the same marble of rich raspberry and orange from the background of the painting.

This painting is part of my “Autumn’s Glory” collection that celebrates both the natural patters of the leaves layered on top of one another and the colors of fall.

In this piece, I wanted to play with rendering the leaves in detail out to flat shape. There are some areas where I have tight detail and other areas where the shape is simple and even flattened. It's a symphony of color and shape even more than it's a depiction of a real plant.

My work with lichen is an exploration of the micro-worlds of our forest floors. These formations are so small I had to use a magnifying glass in front of my phone lens to capture source images. But once I had those images, I could explore the amazing depth of their spaces in paint.

I took my source image for this painting in the Sax-Zim Bog of Northern Minnesota.

Orange Chicken of the Woods Painting

Mushrooms are one of my favorite subjects to explore, both in nature and in paint. The colors, patterns and variety of forms keep me always on the lookout during hikes. And there's an element of magic to them; they seem to occupy a space between plant and animal.

My husband forages for "chicken of the woods" every fall. It's an edible mushroom that tastes like chicken, which I find intriguing. There are some ways in which the formation is similar to plumage, I played with that idea in this painting. I rotated and repositioned the mushroom pieces together to create a visual flow similar to feather patterns I've painted off chickens, and maintained a softness even in the harder areas. I rested the composition on a bed of feathers to reinforce the visual relationship of plumage.
